AnthroJobs: Jobs of the week – July 22, 2016

Q:  So… what can you do with your anthropology degree?

A:  Anything you want.

Over the past two years, as I was getting my MA in Anthropology at NC State University, I “managed” to be in course overload every semester. As a grad student I had to take nine credit hours every semester and I always had eleven or more. My plan was to have a very relaxing final semester but then… Introduction to GIS was offered online and there I was again… course overload. I just could not say no to the opportunity of playing with ArcMap for a whole semester. I always loved geography and I was very eager to learn to use a map-making software.

If you graduated with your bachelor’s degree in the past three years and you double-majored or minored in Geography, and if you are as passionate about GIS tools as I am, I have a match for you! “The Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) Group at the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (CSED) is looking for Post Bachelor Research Associates to support spatial research initiatives with special emphasis in remote sensing and imagery analysis techniques to support population modeling.  The work will include imagery/data collection, supervised classification input, pattern recognition to ascertain model accuracy, and verification and validation of outputs. This position would be in support of our Settlement Mapping initiatives to develop accurate data to locate and characterize human settlements.” The position is based in Tennessee. More details about the position and how to apply here.

As you must have noticed by now, I try to find an international job listing every week. This week my pick is Athens, Greece with Internews Europe. The international non-profit is looking for a Humanitarian Data Officer to “support feedback gathering by Internews staff and partners by evaluating methodology and suggesting improvements where necessary, help turn qualitative data into useful content for refugees as assigned by the Managing Editor, and provide regular updates to the Managing Editor on relevant topics and trends.” More information about the position here.

Good luck, fellow job seekers, and until next week!
