From Mary Odell Butler:

It’s a great time to be a practicing anthropologist. The opportunities for us to contribute to the significant changes occurring in the US and around the world have never been greater. As we approach the AAA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, it’s time for all of us to think of where NAPA has been, where we want to go in the coming year and how we can begin to prepare for it. I really hope that you will join us for all of the things that NAPA will be doing in Philadelphia.

NAPA has moved forward with some of the things that are  part of the NAPA Strategic Plan completed last year. One of the first things we have addressed is the lack of guidance for anthropologists who wish to build careers in practice either at the entry level or at midcareer. During 2009, Tom Greaves assembled a Task Force on Mentoring to help improve services to anthropologists seeking to enter practice. The Mentoring Task Force will tell us about what it has found at the NAPA Governing Council meeting on December 3 and the NAPA Annual Business meeting on December 4.

The development of an ethics code for the future is a critically important issue for NAPA and for practitioners generally. At the 2009 AAA Business meeting, the AAA Ethics Committee will present the results of the comprehensive review of the Code of Ethics.

I cannot over-emphasize the importance of a big practitioner presence at this meeting on Thursday, December 3 at 6:30pm (Program # 1-182). The position taken by the Association is crucial to the future of practitioners within AAA.

  1. I forgot to mention that Intercultural training is my field and that it is missing from the list you provide as career choices, perhaps we can list it? and a link to sietar?

    cheers

    • I now see that you are referring to our main page. I believe that intercultural training would fall under “Education and Training” but I will forward your inquiry to the person who put this list together. In addition, please note that we do not link any particular person or business with the list you refer to (unless I am mistaken about the page). Thank you for your attention and concern. EN

    • Hello: I am in Hong Kong for the year and unfortunately will not be able to meet you at this year’s AAA. I saw in the other posts that you would like your line of work (and possibly website) to be listed. Could you refer me to the list that you are talking about? I am responsible for the newsletter and am not sure which list you refer to. But I would be happy to look into this matter. EN

  2. i can not be there in person this year. is there any way to call in/video conference in? if so, i can make it at that time. thanks, nelle steele, practicing anthropologist at microsoft since 2000.

    • I do not believe there is a way to call in or video conference in to the AAA sessions/presentations or to the AAA business meeting. EN

  3. I’m so sorry to be missing the AAA conference this week. Does anyone know if there will be video-streaming of any of the sessions and/or session summaries available after the meeting takes place? I haven’t heard anything from AAA so was wondering if anyone knew of resources for those unable to attend. Any suggestions are appreciated….will have to see what the Twitterverse has to say about #AAA09. 🙂 Thanks!

    • I am also sorry to be missing the AAA conference this week. I have tried to find out if there will be any video-streaming of presentations this year. However, so far, I have not been able to locate any information on this. As this is a concern for several people here, please let us know if you (or anyone else) finds out anything on this matter.
