Governing Council Today: Ellen Puccia, Program Chair, on the AAA Annual Meeting this Week

NAPA is well-represented on the AAA meeting program this year in Chicago, with three invited sessions and eleven additional sessions or roundtables. There are also 15 NAPA-sponsored workshops, covering a variety of topics from data sanitization to stress management to funding graduate school. The NAPA website has a listing by day of all the NAPA activities; navigate over using the “About” link on the dropdown menu above, or simply go to

There are a few other special events to follow.  The Careers Expo on Friday, November 22, from 11 am to 4 pm, is co-sponsored by NAPA. Representatives from NAPA will be available at this event for instant mentoring. This will be of particular interest to students and early career professionals. Seasoned professionals can answer your questions and provide advice about practicing anthropology in a one-on-one setting. As ever, anthropologists employed by various organizations in numerous sectors will be available to discuss careers for anthropologists as you walk through the Expo.

The NAPA Business Meeting will be held on Friday, November 22, from 6:15-8:15 pm, and will include the presentation of the WAPA Praxis Award and the NAPA Student Awards. A special reception is immediately following. This meeting is a great place to learn about what is happening in NAPA and to meet members of the NAPA Governing Council. If you are interested in becoming involved with NAPA, this meeting and the reception are also excellent opportunities to get started on networking and volunteering. Join us for hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The meeting and reception are planned for the Michigan Room up on the 8th floor of the Hilton.

Networking will also be the main attraction at the NAPA Networking Event on Saturday, November 23, from 12:15-1:45 pm. Many NAPA members will be on hand to answer questions and to facilitate networking among attendees. This is always a popular event, both fun and informative.

We look forward to seeing many NAPA members this year. NAPA members, committee volunteers, and those on the Governing Council have been working hard for several months to ensure NAPA members and other attendees will have a valuable experience. We will see you in a day or two in Chicago!
